Indianama is The Story of India, essayed through art where 69 selected artists came together to re-imagine 69 years of independent India. I chose the year 1951 focussing on The First General Elections.
ESCAPE TO FREEDOM
The First General Elections that took place in 1951 were the biggest experiment in a democracy anywhere in the world. Many were skeptical about such an electorate being able to exercise its right to vote in a politically mature and responsible manner. The coming elections were described by some as ‘a leap in the dark’ and ‘rebellious’. And by others as ‘fantastic’ and as ‘an act of faith.’ In this design, I have portrayed the freedom to make a choice by getting inked on the finger.
